Religion in Rome

Today started out with St. Peter's and the Vatican. Huge, vast, ornate and impressive. My favorite bits had to be the statues of saints that fill every nook and cranny. But also the stained glass window with a dove in it. All in all, I don't think it's a place I could worship in- it's just a bit too much. Got a postcard and a present from the Vatican giftshop, and mailed the postcard. Went to the Vatican museums, which are huge. Took the audio guide, which really helped, and wandered for a couple of hours (which is a really long time for me, I tend to go through museums and churches really quickly). The Sistine Chapel was amazing, but smaller than I expected and there were guards everywhere shushing everyone. Kind of comical. Managed to fall and skin my knees for the second time in two days on the way out. Went from there to the Castel Sant'Angelo, but just looked at the outside. Headed down the Tiber river and eventually found the Synagogue near the old jewish ghetto and took a tour(one of the only buildings in Rome with art neuvo styling) and found out that Rome has the oldest continuous Jewish population in Europe. From there I wandered slowly back towards the hostel (picked up presents, checked email and got a yogurt on the way- I really am loving this Greek stuff!). Watched a movie, then bed.
