Museum Day
Today was the day of insane museum-ness, mainly inspired by the deal you can get, where you buy a €7 ticket and can get into 4, but it must be done in one day. So I went to the Museo Nazionale di Umbria, which is an amazing collection of Umbrian works from about 1200 to about 1700, all of which are on religious topics(by which I mean almost every one featured Mary or Jesus in some way). Normally I find this kind of art really boring. However, the people who organized the placards for this museum (English and Italian, so I actually understood everything) must have been planning on people like me, because what they actually focused on was how the paintings styles changed over time, which was really interesting. Apparently Rennaissance art came to Umbria about 50 years later than everywhere else. Next on the list was to go see the Duomo here, which is impressive in it's size, but very ornate, and I've found that after the Basilica in Bologna, I prefer cleaner lines. This was followed by the several THOUSAND year old Etruscan well, which is basically a giant hole in the ground, covered by the street above it. It's cool cause it's old, but it's basically a 15 min excursion (if you take your time). This was followed by the search for the only church in Perugia that still has a fresco by Raphael, but I have decided it doesn't exist. Mainly because the street it is supposed to be on is someone's garage. And I walked around the area for 20 minutes and saw no sign of any church, much less one with a precious work of art. So then I went to the Etruscan artifacts museum, which had some really cool collections of jewelry, and a HUGE collection of burial urns. And that was about the day.
