Class was long, but it was kind of interesting because Scilla taught us all day. Worked on the pronuciation of the "gl" sound. Was wandering around town like crazy trying to get errands run: chocolate to buy, food to cook, showers to take (the heat here has spiked again, and is running high 90s all the time). Met Jasmine at La Rosetta for gelato at 8, then we met up with Julie and ended up getting a disappointing cheese pizza, followed by an extremely lovely nutella pizza (both of which were ingested on the steps). It was a really nice, relaxing evening, although it was a little bit sad saying goodbye to Jasmine and Marylou (they are both leaving before me, although Jasmine is just going to Rome for a while, then coming back). Since I seem not to have much to say about the day, a couple more random observations are in order:
Bells: they are very into ringing their church bells on the hour, quarter, half and quarter till. And since there are lots of churches, it is almost impossible to miss them. The interesting thing is that they seem to really like 5:30 pm. Most half hours get one ring, maybe two if they are lucky. 5:30 gets a solid 10 minutes of crazy bells. So does 11:30 am on Sunday, which leads me to believe it has something to do with mass.
Dogs: most Americans wouldn-t be caught dead with a rat-dog (that term does not need definition, you know what they are). However, they are the dogs of choice here. Big brawny men walk up and down the street with them, and in many cases, I think they are pampered more than the children here (which is saying quite a bit, since I don-t think these kids ever hear the word no).
So those are two of the major differences. Once again, if there is a topic you would like to hear more on, post a comment!
