Venezia- Murano
Got up 7ish, and bought a 3-day bus/vaporetto (boats that work like buses in Venice itself) pass at the tobacco shop downstairs. Took the bus into Venice and immediately got lost on the way to the Rialto Markets, but eventually found them (thats the best way to explore a city anyway, right?) and had a very large breakfast of nectarines, cherries and bread (while sitting in Piazza San Marco, watching the crowds). Decided to take the vaporetto to Murano (to look at the glass) which is an amazing ride: you go right past Cimiterro- the old cemetary where they used to dig up the bodies after 10 years and move them to the mainland. Murano itself is a lot like Venice: sunny, canal centered and with stores at every opportunity (not that it's a bad thing, because the stores here are sooooo interesting with artisianal work and so much stuff we never see in the States). Bought some really pretty earrings, and watched a couple of glassblowing demonstrations before heading back to Venice to wander for a bit. Left the city to head back to Murano around 5 (bad idea, rush hour for bus and vaporetto), and ran in to the girl from North Carolina (whose name I never learned) and we hung out for the rest of the night (wandered Marghera and went to a trattoria for a panino). Got back to the room and it had filled with other American girls, so it was a bit like being home.
