Asama-yama is the most active volcano in the Honshu region of Japan- it has a large ash eruption about every 4 years, the last of which wiped out a town. The base is less than an hour's drive from my house.
At about 2am last night, ash shot 2000 meters in the air. Small earthquakes preceded that.
I slept through it.
