The eternal Thanksgiving debate. I have always come down on the side of those who feel that Thanksgiving dinner just isn't complete without turkey. But what do you do in a country where the only sources of turkey are Disneyland and Subway? Quite the dilemma...
Technically, yesterday was Thanksgiving, according to dates and time changes. But since all the people I know who are celebrating it are celebrating today, I'm counting it as today. Got in some wonderful phone calls to catch up, although I wish I'd gotten time for more. Still nice.
But back to the turkey issue. The ALTs in the area planned a Thanksgiving celebration last weekend, where I could have gotten turkey. But, due to a giant yakiniku supper the night before, I didn't end up going. Which meant I missed my only real chance for turkey. So today, I had my first pork-based Thanksgiving dinner. Ramen.
Don't let the name fool you- this is different from ramen in the states. First of all, the noodles taste significantly different (and better). Secondly, the broth is more than MSG with a little bullion. Third, it comes with toppings (my personal favorites being pork, wakame, bamboo, and something spicy). Absolutely delicious- I was dubious in the beginning, but I wholeheartedly endorse it now.
I doubt that I'll continue with the pork-based Thanksgiving dinner. It just doesn't seem quite right. That said, the ramen here is delicious, and I quite enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner. For those of you who do have turkey and cranberries, though: eat some for me!
