I climbed a mountain today. We started waaaaay too early in the morning, but the bus ride there was gorgeous (and I got to see 27 people cram into a bus smaller than the short buses in the US). The mountain we climbed was either 2500 m or 2800 m (I can't remember) and a lot steeper than I expected- I had been told it was to be an easy hike. 1.5 hours in, I started to question that statement.
The views from the top were totally worth it though. The phrase "it's pretty where I live" runs through my mind daily, but there's nothing quite like looking out over clouds, and knowing it was sheer physical exertion that got you there. And then eating onigiri (rice balls). Wonderful.
I was invited by one of the students in my conversation class, and I'm so glad I went. It was such a fun time trying to communicate with everyone. There was one nice girl who spoke a fair amount of English, but the best part was when we went up and down the line whistling Disney tunes- without the words, they're the same. Things like this help me remember that even though I struggle through some basic daily routines (I still can't remember the words for filling up your gas tank), people here are (probably) just as excited to meet and talk to me as I would have been to meet them in the US.
Oh, and then we had a massive BBQ. It was delicious. I'm really full.
Pics are up on Facebook.
